Romblon: The Philippines' Best Kept Secret

Romblon Philippines hidden gem island

Tucked away in the Sibuyan Sea between Luzon and the Visayas, Romblon is one of the Philippines' best-kept secrets. While Boracay and Palawan dominate the travel headlines, Romblon quietly offers everything that made those destinations famous — pristine beaches, incredible diving, charming towns — without the crowds or the inflated prices.

Romblon Town: History and Marble

Romblon's capital is a beautifully preserved colonial town with a Spanish-era fort overlooking the bay. Fort San Andres, built in the 1600s, offers panoramic views of the harbor and the surrounding islands. The town itself is charming and walkable, with a laid-back pace that invites you to slow down and explore.

Romblon is also known as the Marble Capital of the Philippines. The province produces some of the finest marble in Southeast Asia, and local artisans craft everything from decorative tiles to intricate sculptures. Visiting the marble workshops and showrooms in town is a fascinating cultural experience not found anywhere else in the country.

Tiamban Beach and Bonbon Beach

Romblon's beaches are stunning and largely undiscovered. Tiamban Beach on Romblon island features calm, clear waters and soft white sand, perfect for swimming and snorkeling. What makes it special is the near-total absence of crowds — you may have the entire beach to yourself on a weekday.

On the nearby island of Carabao, Bonbon Beach is one of the most photogenic spots in the province. A long sandbar stretches out into the sea, with shallow turquoise water on both sides — perfect for that quintessential island photo. The beach is accessible by boat from San Jose, Romblon.

Tablas Island: The Largest Island

Tablas is the largest island in Romblon province and offers a diverse range of experiences. Looc Bay Marine Refuge and Sanctuary is a protected area with excellent snorkeling and a resident colony of sea turtles. The falls and inland rivers of Tablas are perfect for those who want to venture beyond the beach.

Alcantara on Tablas is known for its beautiful coves and rock formations, while Odiongan serves as the main commercial hub with more accommodation options and easier access to ferries.

Diving in Sibuyan Sea

The waters surrounding Romblon are rich with marine biodiversity and rarely dived. Coral reefs here are largely untouched, home to a variety of fish, turtles, and occasional whale sharks. Several local dive operators run trips to sites around the province, and the relaxed pace means you will rarely share a dive site with more than a handful of other divers.

Getting There

Romblon is accessible by RoRo ferry from Batangas Port, with vessels serving Romblon Town and Odiongan on Tablas Island. The ferry from Batangas to Romblon Town takes approximately 8-10 hours. There are also flights from Manila to Tugdan Airport on Tablas Island, with select airlines operating this route on certain days.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Romblon is during the dry season from November to May. February to April offers the calmest seas and the most reliable weather for island-hopping and diving. Visiting during the off-peak months of November and early December means fewer travelers and a more authentic local experience.

Stay Connected in Romblon

As one of the Philippines' less-developed provinces, Romblon has limited public WiFi infrastructure. Mobile signal can be patchy in more remote areas. Carrying a pocket WiFi device from TravelWiFiPH is the smartest way to ensure you stay connected, whether you are navigating between islands, looking up tide schedules, or sharing your hidden-gem discoveries with the world.
